German A1 Practice with AI
German A1 is the first CEFR level. At A1 you can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very simple sentences, introduce yourself and others, ask and answer questions about where you live, people you know and things you have, and interact simply when the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
Who German A1 is for
A1 is the starting certificate. It is required for spouse visas to Germany, and it is the level most integration courses and beginner classes finish with. Most learners reach it after 80 to 200 hours of study.
German A1 grammar
- Present tense of regular verbs, sein, haben and the common irregular verbs
- Nominative and accusative cases with definite, indefinite and negative articles
- Separable verbs and the sentence bracket (ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf)
- Modal verbs können, müssen, wollen, möchten
- Word order in statements, W-questions and yes/no questions
- Possessive articles and personal pronouns
- Perfekt with haben and sein for talking about the past
- Imperative for simple instructions and requests
German A1 vocabulary
Roughly 650 to 800 words, all of them concrete and immediate: yourself, family, numbers, time, food, shopping, housing, daily routine, travel and health basics.
German A1 speaking
The A1 speaking exam asks you to introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions from keyword cards, and make and respond to a request using picture cards. Short, clear, correct sentences score better than long attempts that break down.
German A1 writing
You fill in a simple form and write a short message of about 30 words, such as a text to a friend cancelling something. All the prompt points must appear, and the greeting and sign-off count.
German A1 reading and listening
Reading uses short signs, adverts, notes and emails. Listening uses announcements, short phone messages and brief everyday dialogues spoken slowly. Both are about finding one specific piece of information, not understanding every word.
