telc Deutsch

The standard at the end of integration courses and the usual format for professional recognition in healthcare and the trades. Alongside the general exams there are Beruf and Pflege versions with job-specific vocabulary and tasks.

Not every exam opens the same door.

Before you choose a level, check what the office asking for the certificate requires. These are the three most common reasons people take this one.

  • Integration coursetelc Deutsch B1, or the DTZ, is the usual final exam of the integration course in Germany.
  • Nursing and healthcaretelc Deutsch B1-B2 Pflege and B2-C1 Medizin are widely used to recognise foreign qualifications.
  • Trades and apprenticeshipsThe Beruf versions at B1 and B2 use tasks taken from real working life.

General or Beruf?

If you need the certificate for recognition in healthcare, the office usually asks explicitly for the Pflege or Medizin version. Check before you register: a general telc B2 is often not accepted in these cases.

How telc Deutsch is structured.

Based on the published format. Timing and the number of parts can vary by level and version, and your test centre’s model exam is always the reference.

Lesen and Sprachbausteine

Reading plus a separate grammar and vocabulary part, in the written block with Hören and Schreiben.

90 min (B1)

Hören

Three parts: gist, detail and selective listening, usually heard once each.

About 20 min

Schreiben

One task, often a letter or email with set content points. Every point has to appear.

30 min (B1)

Sprechen

Paired exam in three parts: getting in touch, talking about a topic and planning something together.

About 15 min

Practised in the real format

Deutschtrainer keeps its own task format for telc Deutsch: the number of parts, the instructions, the timing and the scoring rule. Switching exams never means starting from scratch.

What actually counts for passing.

Four points that make the difference between “well prepared” and “passed”, and that practice often misses.

Written and oral are separate

The exam has a written block and an oral paired exam, often on different days.

Content points are required

In Schreiben every set point counts. A well-written letter that skips one loses marks for task completion.

Job versions have their own vocabulary

Pflege and Medizin versions expect specialist vocabulary and typical workplace conversations.

The pass mark is 60%

As with Goethe, the usual line is 60%. The exact weighting depends on the exam version.

Your exam date is fixed. Your preparation shouldn’t be.
